Paul Hilliard's Sculptcycle entry:
March 7th -Here is a load of twenty bike frames fresh from the scrap yard. Needed to drive to Burlington to get them, but they were free so that's ok.
March 7th - Let the carnage begin! Sawzall works well for this part.
Mid March- Cutting cutting cutting...It takes a lot of bikes to make enough tubing for what I am working on.
March 30th - Snow bikes.
Naturally, I had other stuff to work on at the same time. I finished three other smaller metal sculptures for shows at the Southern Vermont Art Center and The Carving Studio. Here is one of them called "group of three" Oh, and I went to Florida for a family vacation too
Ok back to work! Here's what has been going on in May.
The frame of my "car" sculpture.
Back in the shop to do some grinding.
Ok, the wheel fits now, and the basic shape is there too.
Adding bars to the sides. The bent bars on the side are where the driver escaped. My sculpture is entitled: "Ex-Car-Ceration" - resembles a jail and giving the idea that someone who had been driving has now escaped. We are prisoners of our cars.
More bars and a steering wheel. All parts are from bicycles. The larger tubes for the main frame and smaller tubes fill in between.
Had to go back to Clinton's shop to make the steering wheel bends. One of his goats was very interested. One week to go!
Here are some 300 lb. blocks of Dorset marble that will become sculptures this summer at a public event in Dorset. As soon as the Sculptcycle is done I can start thinking about what my block will become.
Bars on the floor of the car and bumpers have now been added.
A bike rack! Made from bikes! Too funny. Oh, and I also made the beginning of the licence plate.
Rear view mirrors come in handy too. Two days left to get it all done and painted.
These little chippies visit me all the time when I am in my studio. They like chips!
Finally done! Into my truck and ready to drive two hours north to Montpelier.
Installed! If you would like to see how I made the licence plate or the shackles just click on the word. Thanks.
